Ride to the Roof of Africa—Kilimanjaro Mountain Biking Experience
Mountain biking on Mount Kilimanjaro is a unique adventure that combines high-altitude riding with rough off-road trails. It is perfect for cyclists who want more than just reaching the summit; they want an exciting ride. Routes like Kilema take riders up to high camps, while the Shira Plateau offers wide-open views. Along the way, you will ride through volcanic paths, forests, and alpine desert. You can choose to bike part of the mountain or include it in a multi-day trip. This guide explains what to expect, how to prepare, and the available itinerary options.
Best Kilimanjaro Biking Routes
The Kilema Route is the only official mountain biking route allowed in Kilimanjaro National Park. It is used for both going up and riding down, especially by cyclists who combine biking with hiking. Riders can bike up to Horombo Hut (3,720 m) and sometimes continue higher toward Kibo Hut (4,700 m), then hike the final part to the summit.
Another option is the Shira Plateau Trail. This route has wide, open paths with amazing views. It is great for riding across open land and high plains, but it does not go to the summit. It is best for scenic mountain biking without climbing to the top.
