Tanzania Family Safari
Tanzania Family Safari — Creating Memories That Last a Lifetime
A family safari in Tanzania is more than a holiday. It is the experience that your children will talk about for the rest of their lives — the morning they watched a lion stalk its prey from ten metres away, the evening a herd of 200 elephants crossed the road just ahead of the vehicle, the afternoon they learned to identify 30 bird species before lunch.
At Climb and Sum It Africa, we have spent over a decade designing family safaris that work brilliantly for every member of the group — from curious seven-year-olds to grandparents who have always dreamed of Africa. Every itinerary is private, every vehicle is exclusively yours, and every day is shaped around what your family enjoys most.
Why Families Choose Climb and Sum It Africa
Family travel demands a different kind of expertise. Not just knowledge of wildlife and parks — but an understanding of how to keep children genuinely engaged, how to pace days so that younger travellers thrive rather than tire, and how to ensure that parents can fully relax into the experience.
Our safari specialists are parents themselves. They know that the best family safari is one that balances extraordinary wildlife encounters with flexibility, comfort, and moments of wonder tailored specifically to your children’s ages and interests.
Why families trust us:
- Private family vehicles — a dedicated 4×4 with a pop-up roof, exclusively for your family, departing whenever you choose
- Expert guides experienced with children — patient, knowledgeable, and skilled at bringing the bush alive for young minds
- Flexible daily schedules — we adapt game drives, mealtimes, and rest breaks to suit your children, not a fixed group timetable
- Age-appropriate wildlife education — our guides carry field guides, binoculars, and junior ranger materials for younger guests
- Family-friendly lodge selection — accommodation is vetted specifically for families, with appropriate facilities, fencing, and activities
- End-to-end logistics — all park fees, transfers, accommodation, and documentation handled by our team
- MNRT-registered and KINAPA-licensed — a fully regulated operator you can trust with your family’s safety and investment

Tanzania's Best Destinations for a Family Safari
Serengeti National Park The world’s most famous safari destination and a natural classroom unlike any other. The sight of the Great Migration — over 1.5 million wildebeest, 250,000 zebra, and half a million gazelle crossing the plains — is one of earth’s truly unmissable spectacles for guests of all ages. Predator sightings are frequent and varied.
Ngorongoro Conservation Area The Ngorongoro Crater offers a contained, accessible game viewing experience that is ideal for families. The density of wildlife within the caldera means you rarely need to drive far to encounter elephants, lions, hippos, and flamingos. Game drives here tend to be shorter in duration — well-suited to younger children.
Tarangire National Park Famous for enormous herds of elephant and ancient baobab trees that children find endlessly fascinating. Tarangire is less visited than the Serengeti, meaning a more intimate experience, shorter drives between sightings, and an uncrowded feel that younger travellers appreciate.
Lake Manyara National Park A half-day to full-day park that is perfect for families — compact, manageable, and full of surprises. Tree-climbing lions, enormous flocks of flamingo on the alkaline lake, and habituated baboon troops make this a favourite with children.
Arusha National Park An underrated gem just 45 minutes from Arusha, offering walking safaris with a ranger (suitable for older children and teenagers), canoeing on the crater lakes, and excellent giraffe and colobus monkey sightings. A wonderful first park for families arriving in Tanzania.

Best Time for a Tanzania Family Safari
June – October (Dry Season) The most popular period for family safaris. Dry conditions mean thinner vegetation, animals concentrate near water, and the roads are at their most manageable. The Great Wildebeest Migration river crossings typically occur between July and September — a spectacle that leaves children speechless. Evening temperatures are cool and comfortable.
January – February (Green Season) An excellent alternative for families travelling during northern hemisphere school holiday periods. The Serengeti calving season delivers extraordinary predator activity, the landscape is beautifully green, and lodge rates are often more competitive. Rainfall is generally brief and does not disrupt game drives.
December – January (School Holidays) One of our busiest family safari periods. With international schools on break, we see strong demand from the US, UK, and Australia in December and January. We strongly recommend booking 6–12 months in advance to secure preferred lodges and dates during this window.
Our specialists will help you identify the ideal timing based on your home country’s school calendar and the wildlife experiences that matter most to your family.

Family-Friendly Lodge Selection
Not all safari lodges are suitable for families. At Climb and Sum It Africa we only recommend properties that our team has personally evaluated for families. Key criteria include:
- Secure camp perimeters (particularly important for young children)
- Family rooms or interconnecting suites rather than separate tents requiring night walks
- Dedicated children’s programmes or junior naturalist activities at select lodges
- Early dinner service and child-appropriate menus
- Medical kit availability and proximity to emergency evacuation routes
- Swimming pools (at certain properties — a welcome bonus after a morning game drive)
We will match your family’s specific needs to the right lodges on every night of your itinerary.
Frequently Asked Questions
Everything families need to know before booking a Tanzania safari with Climb and Sum It Africa. Most game drives in national parks are suitable for children of all ages. Some parks (notably Arusha, for walking safaris) have minimum age requirements of around 12 years for walking activities. Hot air balloon safaris typically require children to be at least 7 years old. Our specialists will advise you on any age-specific restrictions based on your chosen itinerary and activities.
Tanzania is one of Africa's most welcoming and politically stable countries. Climb and Sum It Africa manages all logistics — accommodation, transfers, park bookings, and emergency contacts — to ensure your family's experience is safe and stress-free throughout. We also brief all families on bush safety before and during the safari.
Many lodges offer significant discounts for children, typically aged 2–11 years, and some properties allow children under a certain age to stay for free when sharing a room with parents. Park fees are also reduced for children at most national parks. Your Climb and Sum It Africa specialist will provide a detailed breakdown of applicable discounts when building your quote.
Key items include neutral-coloured clothing in layers (mornings and evenings can be cool), a wide-brimmed hat, high-factor sunscreen, insect repellent, and sturdy closed-toe shoes for any walking activities. We provide a comprehensive family packing list with every booking. Binoculars for each child are highly recommended.
Absolutely — a Tanzania family safari combined with 3–5 nights on Zanzibar is one of our most popular programmes. After the excitement of the bush, a few days on a white sand beach with calm Indian Ocean waters is the perfect way to close a family adventure. Many of Zanzibar's beach resorts have excellent children's facilities.
For peak season travel (June–October, December–January), we recommend booking 6–12 months in advance, particularly for families requiring specific lodge configurations or interconnecting rooms. For shoulder season travel, 3–4 months is generally sufficient.
Have a question about travelling with children? Our family safari specialists are happy to help with age-specific advice, lodge recommendations, and everything in between.

We booked a combined Kilimanjaro climb and safari, and it exceeded all our expectations. The Kilimanjaro trek was incredibly well organized. The entire team was professional, attentive, and supportive throughout the journey. Our guide demonstrated outstanding expertise, ensuring not only our safety but also our comfort and confidence every step of the way. The crew took great care of us, always checking on our condition and making sure we were well prepared. The food was excellent—far beyond what we expected on a mountain—and the camp facilities were impressive, offering a level of comfort that felt close to a luxury experience in such a remote environment. After the climb, our safari adventure was equally unforgettable. Our driver-guide was highly skilled, knowledgeable, and engaging.
