6-Day Kilimanjaro Trekking - Umbwe Route
- Mount Kilimanjaro
Trip Overview
The Umbwe Route is the steepest and most direct path to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, rising to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 meters — the highest point in Africa. Approaching from the south, the route climbs sharply through dense rainforest, along a dramatic narrow ridge, and into the open moorland and alpine desert zones before reaching the summit crater. It is widely considered the most challenging route on the mountain, best suited for physically fit and experienced trekkers who want a raw, quiet, and adventurous climb with minimal crowds on the trail.
The 6-day version of the Umbwe Route is a compact and demanding itinerary that moves efficiently through the mountain’s ecological zones with very little margin for slow acclimatization. The rapid altitude gain makes proper hydration, a consistently slow pace, and open communication with your guide absolutely essential at every stage. For trekkers who are well-prepared and altitude-aware, this itinerary is a highly rewarding and achievable challenge.
Your journey begins and ends at Kibo View Farm Lodge, a comfortable and welcoming property situated on the lower slopes of Kilimanjaro near Moshi. Day 1 is your pre-climb arrival and preparation day at the lodge. After five days on the mountain, you descend via the Mweka Route and return to the lodge for your final night before departing on Day 6.
Route: Umbwe Route (ascent) / Mweka Route (descent) Duration: 6 days including arrival and departure Trekking Days: 4 days ascending, 1 summit and descent day Summit: Uhuru Peak, 5,895 m (19,341 ft) Difficulty: Very Challenging Best Season: January to March, June to October. Start and End Point: Kibo View Farm Lodge, Moshi, Tanzania
Why Choose the Rongai Route?
The Umbwe Route attracts trekkers who want something more demanding and more solitary than the popular southern routes. It is the least crowded route on Kilimanjaro, offering a true sense of wilderness and personal space on the trail. The steep ridge ascent through pristine rainforest is one of the most dramatic approaches on the mountain, and the route connects seamlessly into the southern circuit, giving access to the breathtaking Barranco Wall and views of Kilimanjaro’s Southern Icefields and glaciers.
Because the route gains altitude so quickly, it demands more from your body than longer routes like Lemosho or the Northern Circuit. However, for well-conditioned trekkers who respect the mountain and follow their guide’s instructions, the Umbwe Route delivers an intense, memorable, and deeply satisfying Kilimanjaro experience.

Kilimanjaro and Safari Our experience with Climb and Sum It Africa was truly exceptional from start to finish. We booked a combined Kilimanjaro climb and safari, and it exceeded all our expectations. The Kilimanjaro trek was incredibly well organized. The entire team was professional, attentive, and supportive throughout the journey. Our guide demonstrated outstanding expertise, ensuring not only our safety but also our comfort and confidence every step of the way. The crew took great care of us, always checking on our condition and making sure we were well prepared. The food was excellent—far beyond what we expected on a mountain—and the camp facilities were impressive, offering a level of comfort that felt close to a luxury experience in such a remote environment. After the climb, our safari adventure was equally unforgettable. Our driver-guide was highly skilled, knowledgeable, and engaging. He shared fascinating stories and insights about wildlife and the parks, which made the experience even more enriching. Thanks to his expertise, we were fortunate enough to see the Big Five, along with many other incredible animals. Overall, this was a once-in-a-lifetime experience made perfect by a truly professional and passionate team. We highly recommend Climb and Sum It Africa to anyone looking for a safe, well-organized, and unforgettable adventure in Tanzania.Posted on Tripadvisor![]()

6 days Machame Route Innocent (Mountain-Guide, raised in Machame) and his Team made this tour to an wonderful experience! Although I had to cope with nausea and mild headache (AMS) he let me never loose the confidence to accomplish my goal. He was very conscientious in monitoring my healthstatus (including pulse oxymetry) which let me feel save all the time. Experiencing the sunrise on an almost 6000m Volcano after hiking 5days through different vegetation zones is a memory I will never forget!Posted on Tripadvisor![]()

An experience like no other. Absolutely amazing experience! I climbed mount Kilimanjaro with my father and we couldn't be happier with the trip. The guide Innocent relies on extremely professional and caring team. Their support was not only crucial for the success of the climb but also making it very special. The attention to detail and tailor-made experience surprised us a lot. This doesn't apply to the climb alone but also to the preparation, as Innocent made sure we were preparing well and assuring all the gear was in place and ready for the adventure. Accommodation was way above what we saw for other groups and the food made it feel like we were far from a remote camp in a mountain. I highly recommend contacting them if you plan on climbing Kili and are looking for a top notch experience!Posted on Tripadvisor![]()

Our driver was excellent – he really knew how to handle the trails, and while other vehicles got stuck in the mud, we made it through without any problem. We were lucky enough to see the Big Five and so many other animals – it truly felt like a dream come true. The whole trip was well-planned, safe, and full of unforgettable moments. Unvergesslicher Trip Wow! Empfehlenswert!!!
