Materuni Waterfalls and Coffee Day Trip
trip overview
Walk to a waterfall and roast coffee on the slopes of Kilimanjaro.
This day trip takes you to Materuni village near Moshi. You walk through banana and coffee farms to the Materuni Waterfall, about 80 m high, and can swim in the cool pool at its base. Afterwards a local Chagga family shows you how coffee is roasted, pounded and brewed, and you share a traditional lunch. It is a good mix of nature, culture and food for travelers who want to see village life on Kilimanjaro.
day-by-day itinerary
What happens from pick-up to drop-off.
This is a day trip, so there is no overnight stay. Additional hotel nights in Moshi or Arusha before or after the trip can be arranged for an extra cost.
Moshi to Materuni Waterfalls and Coffee Tour
Your driver collects you from your hotel in the morning and takes you to Materuni village on the lower slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro, about 45 minutes from Moshi. Arusha pick-ups start earlier because the drive is longer. In the village you meet your local guide and start walking.
The trail leads through banana groves and coffee farms, crossing small streams and climbing some steep, sometimes slippery sections. After about 1 to 2 hours you reach the Materuni Waterfall, which drops about 80 m into a cool pool. You can enjoy the spray, take photos and swim if you wish.
After the walk back you join a Chagga family for a coffee tour. You help to roast the beans over a fire, pound them in a wooden mortar and taste the fresh coffee. You then enjoy a traditional Chagga lunch in the village, and your driver takes you back to your hotel.
