Kilimanjaro Day Hike via Marangu Route to Mandara Hut
trek overview
Walk into Kilimanjaro’s rainforest in a single day.
This day hike takes you from Marangu Gate (1,870 m) up the Marangu route through montane rainforest to Mandara Hut (2,720 m), the first hut on Mount Kilimanjaro. You walk with an experienced guide, look for colobus and blue monkeys, eat a packed lunch at the huts and return to the gate the same afternoon. It is a good choice if you have limited time or want a first taste of Kilimanjaro without sleeping on the mountain.
day-by-day itinerary
What happens from pick-up to drop-off.
This is a day trip, so there is no overnight stay. Additional hotel nights in Moshi or Arusha before or after the hike can be arranged for an extra cost.
Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut and Back
Your driver collects you from your hotel in the morning and drives to Marangu Gate, about 1 hour from Moshi. Arusha pick-ups start earlier because the drive is longer. At the gate you register with the park, meet your guide and get a short briefing.
You then walk the Marangu route, about 8 km one way, through thick montane rainforest. The path is wide and well kept, with gradual climbs. Look for blue and colobus monkeys, bright forest birds, giant ferns and trees covered in moss. The walk to Mandara Hut (2,720 m) takes about 3 to 4 hours at a slow, steady pace.
At Mandara Hut you rest and eat your packed lunch among the wooden A-frame huts. If you have the energy, your guide can take you on a short walk to Maundi Crater for views over the forest and, on clear days, up toward Kibo. After lunch you walk back down the same trail, which takes about 2 to 3 hours, and your driver takes you back to your hotel.

It is a low to moderate hike. The trail is wide and well kept, with a gradual climb of about 850 m over roughly 8 km. You do not need climbing experience, but you should be able to walk uphill for 3 to 4 hours and back down again.
No. This hike goes to Mandara Hut at 2,720 m, which is the first hut on the Marangu route. The summit, Uhuru Peak (5,895 m), needs a multi-day trek. If you enjoy the day hike, we can help you plan a longer climb.
You walk through montane rainforest with giant ferns, moss-covered trees, colobus and blue monkeys and many forest birds. The mountain summit is often hidden in cloud, so views of the snow cap are not guaranteed.
