frequently asked questions

Questions we get asked most often.

Where does the trek start and end?

The trek starts at Momella Gate in Arusha National Park, with pick-up from your hotel in Arusha or from Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) by arrangement. It ends at Momella Gate on Day 3, followed by a transfer back to Arusha.

How hard is the Mount Meru trek?

Mount Meru is a real mountain climb. Days 1 and 2 are steady uphill walking, and Day 3 is a steep, rocky summit night followed by a long descent. You do not need technical climbing skills, but you should be comfortable walking 6–10 hours a day and be in good physical shape.

Is 3 days enough to reach the summit?

Yes, many fit trekkers reach the summit on a 3-day schedule. The trade-off is less time to adjust to altitude, so success depends on your fitness and how your body responds. If you want a better chance, ask us about the 4-day trek.

Why is an armed ranger needed?

Arusha National Park is home to buffalo, elephant and other large animals. The park requires an armed ranger on every Meru trek for your safety. The ranger fee is already included in your price.

Can I add extra nights before or after?

Yes. Additional accommodation in Arusha before or after the trek can be arranged for an extra cost — just let us know when booking.

Do I need a visa or vaccinations for Tanzania?

Most nationalities need a Tanzania e-Visa, available at immigration.go.tz. A yellow fever certificate may also be required depending on your transit country — check with your doctor or travel clinic before departure.

Can I combine Meru with a safari?

Yes. Many guests trek Meru first and then join a safari to Tarangire, Ngorongoro or the Serengeti. Contact us and we will build a combined program.

What's your refund policy?

We recommend taking out travel insurance as soon as you confirm your booking. Full cancellation and payment terms are on our booking policy page.
